In the process of setting up your Party Squasher sensor, you might discover that there are no available LAN ports on the back of router, as every existing port is currently occupied by an ethernet cable connecting to other devices.
If this is the case, you can use an ethernet switch to increase the number of available LAN ports. Once properly set up, you'll be able to plug the Party Squasher sensor into the switch.
Using a standard setup (connecting directly to a router)
Under normal circumstances, the Party Squasher sensor is connected directly to the router via the supplied ethernet cable, using any available LAN port on the back of the router.
This process entails:
- Plug the provided ethernet cable into the WAN port on the back of the Party Squasher sensor.
- Find an available LAN port on the back of the router; plug the ethernet cable into that port.
- Plug the power cable into the Party Squasher sensor, and begin software setup/configuration.
Connecting via an ethernet switch
Under circumstances where all LAN ports on the back of the router are occupied by ethernet cables connected to other devices, you can use an ethernet switch to make more available. An ethernet switch has a number of its own LAN ports, and connects directly to the router using an ethernet cable.
The process entails:
- Select any LAN port on the back of the router, and unplug the ethernet cable currently occupying it; this will disconnect a device and make a LAN port available.
- Following the manufacturer's instructions, make sure that the ethernet switch is connected to power, if required.
- Plug an ethernet cable into the newly-available LAN port on the back of the router. Then plug the other end of that cable into the primary port of the ethernet switch (conventionally this is the first port, but as always refer to manufacturer's instructions).
- Plug the ethernet cable from the disconnected device into any available LAN port on the ethernet switch.
- Plug the provided ethernet cable into the WAN port on the back of the Party Squasher sensor.
- Find an available LAN port on the ethernet switch; plug the ethernet cable into that port.
- Plug the power cable into the Party Squasher sensor, and begin software setup/configuration.
